Whether you’re a spectator, participant or a little of both, Arizona is a sports lover’s paradise. With year-round sunny skies, you never have to lose a day or two of your vacation due to inclement weather. Surprise is the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers baseball teams. These Major League Baseball teams use Surprise Stadium for their activities.  Surprise is also a popular destination for fans who want close proximity to Phoenix and Glendale for Major League Baseball’s 2001 World Champs, the Arizona Diamondbacks, as well as the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. The NHL’s Arizona Coyotes and NFL’s Arizona Cardinals both play in nearby Glendale.


Spring Training at Surprise Stadium (March)

Tennis and Racquet

As part of the city’s Recreation Campus, Surprise is also home to the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex (STRC). Since its opening in August 2007, the complex has received numerous awards. Most recently, it was named the 2008 Outstanding Facility of the Year by the USTA. The complex hosts various professional events throughout the year, including the Outback Champion Series tour, a USTA Pro Circuit event, and many USTA regional and sectional events. In 2009 the complex was chosen as the site for the Fed Cup Quarter Final between the USA and Argentina. Play tennis, racquetball and table tennis at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. They have leagues as well as drop-in tennis. From time to time you can also catch professional exhibition tennis here.

Surprise is conveniently located close to Avondale, home of Phoenix International Raceway, which hosts some of the largest crowds in the state for NASCAR® and Indy races. Surprise offers easy access to Avondale via the new Loop 303.

Surprise Aquatic Center

There’s swimming — always welcome in the desert heat — and there’s swimming plus amusement park fun at the Surprise Aquatic Center. The 4,700-square-foot water play area with a zero-depth area also features two water slides, a flume, a tunnel and a vortex whirlpool. A competition pool, a diving well and two, one-meter diving boards give more serious swimmers a chance to hone their skills.
